Sen. Bunning stands alone
Read Michelle Malkin on Sen. Jim Bunning’s “lone effort against a Senate $10 billion jobless benefits/COBRA extension bill.” The Democrats are “going bonkers,” the liberal media are demonizing and smearing him, and his own party is washing their hands of him. All signs that he’s doing something right.

Yes. Rush was talking about this today quoting Cato people. These longer benefits perpetuate unemployment, which Michelle also covers. But that’s too hard for the MSM to absorb.

Debra Saunders defends him as a lonely idealist:

Well I guess if one were expected to find work when collecting jobless benefits that might take some of the fun out of “funemployment.” There is a fine line between when providing a safety net crosses over to becoming a “big comfy couch” but Bunning was merely asking that the extension of Benefits be paid for. Too bad he called attention to some hypocrisy on the left and the right in the process.

The sad thing is that it’s the fiscally responsible thing to do and that somehow that makes it evil. We can’t afford anything we are doing now, so why are we trying to do more and more? When are we going to learn that we are destroying our country by continuously supporting entitlements that we cannot afford? We can either be strong and economically secure or we can become a banana republic. These are fast becoming our only choices, and someone (who isn’t retiring!) will need to step up to the third rails and make some hard choices. It’s looking more and more like that someone will have to be we, the people.

I work in a credit union. I am seeing almost as many unemployment checks as paychecks. My son is back to work after a five month layoff. He went to work with a temperature today and finished the day out despite getting a call that his father-in-law had passed away because he knows that there are literally a hundred guys “on the bench” to replace him. I understand unemployment on a very personal level. However, this country is in deep financial crisis. All Bunning is asking is that if we need to pay for unemployment that we need to take that money from something that we don’t need. We passed “PayGo”. Was that just for show?

I’ve been unemployed twice, once in 1999 and once in 2003. I did nothing but look for work! At first I was mad at him until I was able to get all the information and I totally supported him.
