They’re Starting to Cave
Robert Costa reports at The Corner “They just want this over,” quoting Bart Stupak on the reason at least one or two of his colleagues have caved:
What are Democratic leaders saying? “If you pass the Stupak amendment, more children will be born, and therefore it will cost us millions more. That’s one of the arguments I’ve been hearing,” Stupak says. “Money is their hang-up. Is this how we now value life in America? If money is the issue — come on, we can find room in the budget. This is life we’re talking about.”
If Obamacare passes, Stupak says, it could signal the end of any meaningful role for pro-life Democrats within their own party. “It would be very, very hard for someone who is a right-to-life Democrat to run for office,” he says. “I won’t leave the party. I’m more comfortable here and still believe in a role within it for the right-to-life cause, but this bill will make being a pro-life Democrat much more difficult. They don’t even want to debate this issue. We’ll probably have to wait until the Republicans take back the majority to fix this.”
“Throughout this debate, even when the House leaders have acknowledged us, it’s always been in a backhanded way,” he laments. “I’m telling the others to hold firm, and we’ll meet next week, but I’m disappointed in my colleagues who said they’d be with us and now they’re not. It’s almost like some right-to-life members don’t want to be bothered. They just want this over.”
Read the rest, it’s sad. Stupak is correct there can be no pretense there is any meaningful role for pro-life Democrats. It’s about money over life, what a despicable view of life for the born and pre-born alike.

Death panels to prevent life, too?

So they are monsters.

Sad. I had had my doubts about Stupak, but he’s really hanging tough on this issue, God bless him.

A slightly more hopeful quote: http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=MTg4ZjdhN2FmNWFlYWJmNWJiZTZjYWE1N2RlNDdjMTA=

It is more hopeful. The most hopeful news is they are not voting and they definitely don’t have the votes they need yet.

And that’s exactly why this bill will inevitably MEAN health care rationing–money over life. It’s not just about the unborn, this same philosophy holds and will be exacerbated by a larger government role in our health care decisions. Why is anyone surprised by this? Isn’t this exactly why we don’t want this bill passed? Above and beyond the abortion issue, rationing will come down to a cost-benefit analysis for people, and if you’re going to cost more than you can contribute to the utopian society, you die.

I think the stunning part was the admission, not that we couldn’t believe that is their underlying philosophy. I posted the Naked Emperor audio earlier today where Stupak admitted they wanted to fund abortion but he didn’t go as far as he does here.
I wholeheartedly agree we know this will inevitably lead to rationing. As Jill said earlier this confirms our suspicions they are monsters. Allahpundit speculates that it is likely Waxman who would have been more likely to admit this, which makes some sense. I also suspect that Stupak is signalling to other Democrats who profess to be pro-life but willing to cave to get this over with what the backlash will be. Open Left is keeping track of who might be in Stupak’s group and how many may be caving. I would say these are the people who should be targeted in phone calls.

Interesting, just heard Waxman issued a statement saying his position hasn’t changed. He doesn’t support changes to current law that prohibits tax payer money from being used to fund abortion. Yeah right.

heh. yeah right indeed. These people are despicable.

It is STILL Party over principle. NOTHING else will ever explain caving on this issue.
