New Food Safety Reg Bans Organic Food and Farmer’s Markets
Trojan Horse Law: The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009
A misguided bill, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, may shut down farmer’s markets and “drive out of business local farmers and artisanal, small-scale producers of berries, herbs, cheese, and countless other wares, even when there is in fact nothing unsafe in their methods of production,” warns legal commentator Walter Olson at Overlawyered.
Read the whole thing. I don’t know whether to laugh or weep.

Absolutely unbelievable. As someone who likes to purchase used books for my kid (because–what a shocker–the books written in the 70s have richer vocabulary!) in addition to my habit of preferring to buy the majority of our produce locally, I’m peeved. Greatly. Especially since we’re about to start buying grass-fed beef by the half-cow from local ranchers.
Oddly enough, I thought Michelle and gang wanted us to “eat healthier.” BS. I am feeding my family in the best way possible, and now that will have to change, too.
The government needs to stay the hell out of my pantry, my freezer, and my fridge.

Other than basic food safety regs like don’t sell rancid hot dogs made from bugs and snouts, I absolutely agree with you that the government needs to stay the hell out of my kitchen as well as my body and language-usage.

During tough economic times, people who are lucky enough to have a little patch of ground become more reliant on their own gardens.
Perhaps the goal is to starve us all to death. It sure looks that way.
Sadly, this government is all about breaking down respect for the rule of law by making laws that are ridiculous and dangerous. Pretty soon we’ll all be shopping on the black market.

True, isn’t there also some kind of new “law” that prohibits you giving away your own garden vegetables to your neighbors? Seems like I read that somewhere.

Yep, here it is: http://www.examiner.com/foreign-policy-in-san-diego/proposed-law-could-make-sharing-foods-from-private-gardens-a-threat-to-national-security
Stupid, of course. These kinds of things worked like a charm in the Soviet Union and China, but . . . give me a break, no way will it work here.

Just saw this quote from Atlas Shrugs offered by commenter Nobody Special at Legal Insurrection:
Did you really think we want those laws observed? said Dr. Ferris. We want them to be broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against… We’re after power and we mean it… There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted ? and you create a nation of law-breakers ? and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Reardon, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.
Now that’s what I call evil.

Time for some civil disobedience me thinks. I’m no vegan but this is just asinine. And PJ you better add your bookshelves to that list of yours.

I read the both the House bill and the Senate bill and I don’t find this language in there. No where in the bill does it talk about home gardens. I keep reading all this info about how this happen if the bill passes, but I don’t understand it. Does anyone know where in the bill it talks about home gardens? There is a some stuff in there about food allegeries and schools which I found to be a little intrusive, but I am trying to figure out what I am missing.
